Backpacks are Back!
Just a few short years ago, the idea of teaming a backpack up with tailoring would’ve been unthinkable. Wearing one at all would be out of the question if you wanted your style credentials to remain intact.
A backpack was always about as nerdy an accessory could get. Somewhere to stash your packed lunch, comic books and trainspotting notes. Now, however, there’s a new climate.
This typically uncool piece of luggage has been reinvented, using premium materials and sleek styling to elevate its place within the fashion landscape. Today, you’d be hard pressed to find a high-end label that doesn’t have some sort of luxurious leather backpack in its luggage roster, making it cool beyond question.
If you're going to wear one with a suit, make sure it’s black or brown leather for best results (the backpack, not the suit) and opt for a style free from excessive details.
It’s difficult to believe, that just a few years ago, pretty much the only people wearing backpacks were either school kids who needed something to stash their Pokemon cards in or backpackers ready to climb a mountain.
Functional or Fashional?
Backpacks in general were always far too functional to be considered fashionable. Starting to wear one on a day today basis, was to admit that you’d given up. Choosing a backpack was equivalent of using the stairs from the 10th floor instead of the elevator, because you just can't be bothered waiting for it. Practical? I don't think so.
These days, however men’s luggage perspective is in a different place and a practical type of bag has become the gold standard. Fashion Risk Takers who would’ve turned up their noses and popped the idea of wearing one just five years ago. Now the same people are parading them around proudly at fashion weeks along with the now famous cross-body bags.
It’s not just luxury backpacks, there’s been a revival of the everyday bag too, with more people than ever using one for their day to day duties. Why is it suddenly a fashion-approved bag trend? Let me explain...
There was a gap in the market for an everyday use bag, a functional product with an injection of design. Brands like Herschel and Eastpak have been instrumental in the resurgence of the backpack, creating functional items that actually look good and make people want to wear them.
Why Hold it when you can Pack it?
It's a fact that people are always on the move these days and they have a lot of things to carry around, such as phones, laptops, books, wallets, gym gear, power banks etc.
The backpack is a versatile piece of fashion you can put all your essentials in it, and more. Whether you go to work, to the gym, or into the city for a day, the backpack has got your back "literally".
If you’re in the market for some hands free luggage, what should you be looking out for? I will give you some main points. The most important point is the quality and durability of the bag. The backpack is an accessory people should be able to rely on, in all situations.
Look at size and functionality, depending on where you are going, and what you need to carry. Once you narrow it down, you can choose a style that fits with your personality and style. To be honest I have a rotation of 3 bags which I use depending of the outing.
Remember it’s supposed to be a practical bag, too. Look out for things like key clips, laptop pockets and air mesh straps. Details make the difference.
